The morning light filtered through the porthole. Cally woke with a start. She
brushed her tangled hair out of her face, and ran up the stairs tripping as she
went to the deck. Mitch was there, being all handsome in the morning's light, with his
sandy hair hair looking as if it were threaded with gold. Cally went to the side of the boat,
and looked out at the ocean with him. He turned to smile at her, leaning closer when,
just then the boat lurched to the side as a huge wave crashed down on to them.
The wave had appeared out of nowhere. Cally screamed as she was drenched in
ice cold water and thrown over the side of the boat she flew into the air as Mitch
screamed her name, his voice filled with anguish. She plumted into the water sinking
faster and faster, the light gradually disappearing from above. She tried to cry out
for help, but the water eagerly filled her lungs. She tried to cough, but this was
only a reflex. When she breathed in again, she realized she wasn't dead.
With this new wonder, she forgot about Mitch, and the boat, and the sky,
and sun, and swam deeper into the watery depths of the ocean, losing
herself to the black freezing waters.

The first thing that Kalli realized was that the corner store wasn't open on Friday. It was always open on Friday. Friday was when Kalli met Tobrian at the soda fridge, and they walked down to the river, skipped stones, and talked about Mordecai. The second thing was that Tobrian never came. He didn't come and realize the shop was closed. In fact, no one came. That was the third thing. There were no cars, no pedestrians. Just an overcast day, with some faraway radio on, and a lot of closed windows and doors. Kalli sighed, and sat down on the step, on the hem of her too-big red sweatshirt that needed a wash. She chewed on her lip, then she scolded herself, and chewed on her fingernails instead. Finally, when it was obvious that Tobrian was not coming, and no one else was for that matter, Kalli got up, and moped her way to the bus stop. There was no one there either. No cars, no school bus, no Tobrian, no nothing. Just a slight chill, clouds, and Kalli. The radio had stopped. It was very quiet. The bus didn't come. Kalli watched the clouds get darker, until the streetlights came on. it was sort of chilly. Kalli wondered if she should go knock on someone's door, but she didn't know anyone on this street.
Kalli was woken by a stiff pain in her neck, from having slept with it at an odd angle to the side of the bus stop. The streetlights were off, and there was grey light filtering through the heavy clouds which refused to give their rain. There was still no one there. Kalli suddenly realized that it was 9:30am! She was late for school! Kallie tore off up the street, her lungs burning, eyes still bleary. Kalli's hair was a tangly, stringy mess. She had meant to take a shower the night before. Finally, 3 1/2 minutes, what felt like an eternity later, Kalli arrived at school, ready to be reprimanded. But there was no one there. Kalli sighed, and tried the door, surprised when it swung open. Inside, the halls were dark, until Kalli opened the office door, and flipped a switch. The hall lights came on, but the rooms stayed dark. Kalli walked out into the hall. "Hello?" Kalli called,
unhopeful. "IS SOMEONE ELSE THERE?" a panicked voice shouted. Hopeful, Kalli ran down the hall, up the stairs, to the third floor, and saw a
lit class room. "I'm here!" Kalli called. An uplifted face appeared in the door window, and Kalli's heart sank. It was Mordecai Frederickson.
Kalli dropped to the floor, hoping he hadn't seen her. This boy was her absolute worst mortal enemy of all time. Mordecai tiptoed out from behind the door, and nudged Kalli with his foot. He wanted to make sure she wasn't dead. That was when he made
a disgusted voice at the back of his throat, and backed up the next set of stairs. Mordecai felt behind him for the doorknob, and slipped into the uppermost floor of the school. Kalli breathed deep, and then opened her eyes in relief when she didn't smell Mordecai. You could smell him from a mile away, his stench was so bad. Like petrichor, the smell of dust after rain, gone rotten. As if he bathed in mothballs, then rubbed old blusher on himself, then spent three and a half hours in a sweat lodge filled with manure. In other words, gag worthy. Tobrian didn't smell it. He just smelled
not washing, but then, that was one of their debates down by the river. Tobrian didn't hate Mordecai with the same fiery passion that Kalli did. Tobrian just viewed him with distaste. To Tobrian, Mordecai was just a chewed piece of gum stuck to the seat of his pants. Kalli dragged herself off the floor, and clomped up the stairs. Even if she hated Mordecai, he was another person, and she, the humanlone wolf, was admitting to herself that she was getting lonely.

I watch the sky begin to develop streaks
of orange, pink and yellow colors from the setting sun that painted the clouds.
I sigh with contentment. The grass has come once more, and flowers are showing
themselves. The air is a soft warm kiss compared to the winter’s cruel cold.
I come to a clearing, my bare feet loving the feel of fresh grass and soil, my
feet always bare. The birds
and frogs chirp all around me. A breeze had picked up my dark gold hair making
it twirl like a dancer. I sit down, feeling peace and clarity, and a silent joy
that spring has finally come. Much later on I hear a rustle in the bushes beside me disturbing the silence, I peer at the bush seeing only a flash of purple. I get up slowly and begin to walk foward. There's nothing in the bushes, but again I see a flash of purple ahead, farther away this time. I begin to run towards it my feet pushing off the ground, making a rythmic sound. I don't see the crevice until its too late. It's just large enough for somebody to fall into. I try to stop but I just end up slipping and plunging into the hole. Then just below me, I see a flash of purple.
