The Key To Darkness by Brynn
But this is where Lia's pity ended. She was above all, her large black wings keeping her hovering in the air. She shook her short brown hair and sighed, not knowing why she felt sorry for the pitiful humans. Just the fact that they all walked around in their own despair, when they could easily come to her world where there was no such thing as being unlucky or hungry or tired. But this is where Lia's pity ended. it's better that they didn’t come - they would bring doubt and sorrow with them... plus their own stupidity. This is why they never made it, and only the strong, smart ones deserved this. she shook her head, and flew towards the gate, her hands sliding over the golden metal bars, her gold eyes unblinking. she was the guardian of this gate, and only she decided who was worthy of her world. That’s when Lia dropped something. The key. The key to the gate left for a mortal to find. And for a mortal to find Lia's world, so they could save humanity from this. But let’s not forget Lia, who is now locked out of her own world.
Atmosphere by Catori
My heart fluttered. And was still. I floated for a minute, just above my still body, looking into my bloodied face. Then I floated away. I shot up past the stained brick walls, and into the dim sky. As I ascended, the sky grew still darker, until the sun disappeared. I was there for the first star to appear, and the next, and the next. And then I went up through the scarily thin film that was the atmosphere, and into space.
Once Young Now Old by Brynn
He was old. He used to be young, but that is another story. All he must do now is make sure the next knows so they don’t make the same mistake. He scribbles furiously onto the paper. He is in a hurry, but no one knows why. The people call him insane, crazy, and even more horrible names, but if they had been through what he had been through, I would like to see them do any better. But it’s too late, for our tale ends here, for now. For if you had been watching closely you would have seen a shadow of a man cast over the other's writing. The now old man looks up with huge eyes and smiles. He now knows you know it is the end, and then he is gone. Nothing is left. The other man growls - the hunt is on.
A Wholehearted Meal by Catori
He ran. He ran and ran and ran and ran. But it wasn't fast enough. His pursuer smirked, and pounced on the boy, knocking him out, possibly killing him. In any case, the boy wouldn't recover. Staria straightened up, the boy's whole heart in her hand, only a small slit in his chest. Staria ate the heart whole, and continued on her journey, leaving the body of the boy. She could already feel the forest spirits taking him. Just like they always would. After all, Staria was their master.
A Special Bird by Brynn
She looked.
She watched.
She waited.
Nothing happened.
Till now.
There was a bird - a pretty bird - but nothing special.
Yet she loved the bird, she didn't know why.
But she did.
And that is all that was ever truly important for this bird was special... in a very special way.
A Cat in the Road by Catori
I had shoved my face deep into the sweet smelling sky blue pillow, filling myself with the scent of Keely. Of course, I had thought to myself, if I do this too much, Keely will just fade out of the pillow. That was then. Back when I had just adjusted to not being able to hear the birds rustling in the tree, or the cicadas arguing with each other. I couldn't say it was better. That was the time right after Keely had left, gone forever. Keely was my girlfriend. One summer night, she and I had been driving back from the beach, and watching the sunset, when I swerved to try and avoid a cat in the road. Sadly, just as I swerved, a huge U-Haul truck was right there. The cat died. Keely died. I lost my right ear, and all my hearing. And the U-Haul drove off, unknowing, and uncaring. Now, of course, it could be called worse. But who wants to hear more misery?
Power Hungry Bug by Brynn
Swaying back and forth, twirling with their partner, the couples danced across the floor. Today was a day of celebration. The full moon shone above them, but already it was disappearing. It was the eclipse. The dancers stopped, and the quiet singing began. It grew louder and louder, until the moon was gone, and complete and utter darkness fell upon them. And they smiled, for now they were alight with the moon's energy, each one glowing. Except for the goddess, who shone in herself. Her skin and hair glittered while light flowed out of every pore on her body. They rejoiced in the dark, and once more began to sing and dance, but all to soon the darkness fled, and the moon's energy left them powerless. They all bowed their heads. Who knew when the next eclipse would come. Until then they would be normal. Powerless. And they left, and the square was empty, except for a lone lighting bug. The only thing known on earth to steal the moons power, and keep it. This bug was very special. One day this bug would take over the world.
Men in the Attic by Catori
Darting in the shadows, Elenara hides. She puts a hand to her mouth to stifle the giggles, as Jay walks past her hiding spot. But he doesn't look like he's looking for her. As he passes, he whispers "Elenara, go to your best hiding spot. Not the play one. I'll catch you up. It's like a game.” Then at her protest "Just go." Elenara runs to the attic, creeps up the stairs, and settles herself in one of the big, dusty cardboard boxes her brother had showed her. Elenara hoped her brother would come soon. After all, though he called it a game, Elenara knew. She hears shouting from the front door, and pulls some other boxes in front of hers. Then she hears a gunshot. There are running footsteps. Jay bursts into the attic, bleeding copiously from his arm. He scoops up his sister, and carries her to a large, blanket covered shape. By this time, there are more shouts, and heavy footfalls. Jay sets Elenara down, and pulls the tarp off the huge shape. Before she can make sense of it, Jay pushes her inside, gets in, and slams the door shut behind them, locking a complicated lock. Slowly, lights turn on, revealing the bridge of a very high tech spaceship. Elenara whispers as she hears the men's voices from outside. She hears words like "traitor", jail", and "kill them". Jay presses a button, and a screen appears, showing them the attic, and the men. Elenara can't see their faces behind the thick metal helmets. Finally, Jay presses a button, and pulls a lever, and the space ship rumbles, shakes, and lifts slowly out of the atmosphere, and into space! Elenara smiles, and Jay grins, as they move at the speed of light into space.
The Guitar by Brynn
She is small her age is only 5. Her blonde curls are neatly pulled back into a ponytail. She stares at the guitar with wonder, her small, pudgy fingers tracing the instrument lightly. She can feel it, deep down inside. This guitar was meant to be hers.
...............
...................................
12 years later
..............................Her fingers expertly picked the strings of her guitar. She sighed at the sound. Perfectly tuned. She hugged it to her chest finger stroking its side. This was her first guitar this was the guitar that inspired her fingers to move fast and with rhythm over the piano keys. The same guitar that she learned to have her voice harmonize with. The guitar she must now leave. She strums it one last time sets it down and moves on her flight leaves in an hour.
20 years later.......
.............................. The guitar has lain in the attic unused, untouched, unloved. If the guitar could talk, it would tell you it misses its player - the one who learned to speak to it. The one who learned to make her own music with it. A new family has moved in. There are footsteps bumping on the stairs until a small face appears it has blonde curly hair and is about the age of 5. Following her is a woman with long, wavy blonde hair. She looks around, smiling. She used to almost live up here as a child. Then her eyes fall on the guitar, and a grin spreads across her face. Her eyes light up as she laughs. She picks up the guitar, and once more begins to play. Her daughter watches in wonder. Just then, a baby's cry can be heard. The mother sets down her beloved guitar, and goes to help her younger son. The little girl curiously plucks at the strings. A twang emanates from the guitar. She laughs and knows right then and there that this guitar was meant to be hers.
The Wall by Catori,
the day the walls fell was the day my brother died. He was my twin brother. He
said to me "Harlem, I'm going to kick some bad guy butt. You just gotta promise
not to miss me, 'cause I'm doing it from heaven." He had been ill for months,
but he was worse that day. My parents were out, fighting for the wall, though
they knew they would fail. Parliament had beed feverish. He had been delirious.
But now, on his deathbed, he was clear. He had no sign of sickness, except for
the aura of sourness that comes with illness. I thought I would get sick,
because we were twins. After all, we always did everything together, Harlem and
Parliament, "conjoined" twins. But we weren't conjoined. So it was only
Parliament that died, at the instant the walls fell. When the gargantuain boom
of the tons and tons of rocks falling made it's way to my ears, Parliament was
already dead. he was still warm. What I didn't know was that my parents had also
died, the rock falling on their bodies, crushing them, never to be found again.
I had wished I had died that day. Hoped the enemy armies on their huge horses
would spear me on one of their javelins. but no such luck. Now, three years
later, here I am. A 12 year old Harlem on the rigging of a huge Galleon. On the
sea that was once my town. Because what I didn't know at age nine, was that the
boom was water. The wall had been keeping out the ocean that encased the entire
rest off the world, and the enemy had been time. I had never had a chance, and
Parliament an even slimmer next-to-nothing. So now I'm a ship's boy. On a world
of water.
